Łagów’s Knights Hospitaller Castle: lakes through the tower windows

The lake returns in every opening

At Łagów, the lake keeps returning through the tower openings. We would leave time for the climb if it is open and suitable for us, then come back down to see the castle’s lower walls and the water from the shore.

A commandery between two lakes

The Knights Hospitaller acquired Łagów as a pledge in 1347 and obtained ownership in 1350 when the debt was not repaid. They built a masonry castle on the narrow land between Lakes Łagowskie and Trześniowskie, as the seat of a commandery.

The castle grew beyond its medieval form. An eastern wing was added after 1712 under commander Christian Ludwig von Hohenzollern. After the order’s dissolution in 1810, the property passed to the Prussian state. The building now contains a hotel and restaurant.

Climb if the tower suits the day

Our tower photographs keep finding water through brick openings and metal grilles. Those framed views are what would draw us upstairs, if the tower is open and the climb is suitable for everyone in the group.

Come back down for the courtyard and a shoreline walk. Seeing the lake at ground level gives the tower views a useful second perspective, while the lower walls make the castle easier to read as a building.

Plan the visit

Check tower admission and opening with the castle operator before travelling. Narrow stairs and elevated openings make this different from a level lakeside walk. Hotel and restaurant access do not imply access to every part of the castle.
