Saint Giles’ Church: a small pause below Wawel

A reason to pause here

St Giles is an easy building to miss while looking up at Wawel. We would pause beside its side wall and the devotional image before taking the hill approach.

A Gothic church and an older foundation tradition

The church has a foundation tradition involving Władysław Herman and the birth of his son in 1086. Kraków’s visitor guide distinguishes that story from the archaeological evidence: the standing Gothic church dates from around the early fourteenth century.

The Katyń Cross was erected in the square outside in 1990 to commemorate Polish victims of Soviet repression. A stop here therefore brings together the older church and a much more recent memorial.

Pause before climbing the hill

Our photographs follow the side wall and the devotional image. We would take that small circuit before looking up towards Wawel. The church’s size and position can make it disappear beside the castle, but stopping at its doorway gives the approach a different pace.

Plan the visit

Visit the exterior from the public space at the foot of Wawel. Check church notices for services and interior access; an old published service time should not be used without confirmation. Keep the memorial area clear during commemorations. The castle visit uphill has separate ticket and access arrangements.
