Basztowa Street: look up along the edge of Planty

A reason to pause here

Basztowa makes us look up from the tram route to the long frontages and pointed corner roofs. We like it as the edge of an Old Town walk, with the Planty close enough to turn into whenever we want more shade.

Buildings around the new garden ring

When Kraków’s old defences gave way to Planty in the nineteenth century, the surrounding streets developed a different civic setting. The city library’s account describes offices, insurance buildings, hotels and townhouses along Basztowa. Their taller façades face the public gardens rather than a surviving continuous defensive wall.

Use the park side for a wider view

We would look up at the pointed corner roofs, then step into Planty to see the buildings across the street. That gives the camera more room than the narrow pavement beside traffic. The northern gates and Jan Matejko Square fit a continuation on foot.

Basztowa is a transport corridor with tram tracks and road crossings. Photograph from the pavement or park, never the tracks. Use current city transport information for stops and service changes.
