Benches beside the water

The benches and red-railed crossing give us a simple way to continue a Żagań walk beside the water. We would take this route slowly enough to look back across the river before returning towards the palace grounds.

Dorota and the palace neighbourhood

Duchess Dorota de Talleyrand-Périgord took up residence in Żagań in the nineteenth century and directed changes to the palace and its surroundings. The municipal walking route following her life connects buildings, parks and river views across the town.

The river setting belongs to that wider walk. Our photographs record the present paths and crossings; they do not establish when each section of paving or railing was installed.

Let the crossing set the pace

The red railing gives our photographs a clear line to follow towards the water. We would stop near the benches first, then cross where the public route allows and look back at the trees along the bank.

Pair this stretch with the palace grounds if they are open. The riverside makes a useful pause between the larger buildings of a Żagań day, especially when we want a little time outside after looking at interiors.

Plan the visit

Use the town’s Duchess Dorota route leaflet to connect the stops. Check palace access separately from the public riverside walk, and follow any closures at bridges or along the water. Wet paving and unprotected bank edges need attention.
