Brickwork between the trees
Fort Saint Benedict appears gradually between the trees in our photographs. We would make the exterior part of a Lasoty Hill walk, staying on open routes instead of assuming the fenced building is available to explore.
An Austrian fort on Lasoty Hill
Fort 31, named for nearby Saint Benedict’s Church, was built in 1853–1856 as part of the Austrian military defences of Kraków. Its tower form belongs to the Maximilian type of fortification. The church and the military building are separate places with very different origins.
Follow the open paths around the hill
The rounded brick exterior is partly screened by trees in our collection. We enjoy the changing view as the path moves around the wooded ground, with the fence setting a clear limit to the visit.
Combine the fort exterior with Saint Benedict’s Church and the open parts of Lasoty Hill. A city view between the trees can be a good place to pause, but a worn track heading towards masonry does not establish permission to enter.
Plan the visit
Plan this as an exterior visit unless an organised opening is specifically announced. Stay outside the fenced grounds and follow public routes. Woodland slopes and uneven ground can make this a less convenient walk than the paved streets below.
- Check access to Saint Benedict’s Church separately from the fort.
- Choose open paths around the hill instead of entering gaps beside the fence.
