Gołębia Street: brickwork in Kraków’s university quarter

A reason to pause here

The brick façade and lit passage make this short university-quarter lane worth noticing after dark. We would look at the doorway, then follow the street towards the neighbouring courtyards.

The university around the corner

Kraków’s university was founded by Casimir the Great in 1364 and renewed in 1400 with support from Queen Jadwiga’s bequest and King Władysław Jagiełło. The university buildings around Gołębia belong to a much longer sequence of growth and rebuilding. Nearby Collegium Novum dates from the 1880s.

Look through the illuminated arch

Our small gallery stays close to stepped brickwork and the light falling through a passage. We would walk from the street towards the university quarter, noticing carved stone entrances along the way. The façades are an outdoor pleasure even when a museum visit is not on the day’s plan.
