Kraków Town Hall Tower: a surviving piece of the old town hall

A reason to pause here

The tower changes shape as we move around it: a broad market-square landmark from a distance, then stone details and steep walls close up. We would check the climb before setting a visit time.

What survived the town hall

Kraków’s town hall was built around 1300 and housed the city’s authorities, courts and treasury. Most of the building was removed in the nineteenth century. The Gothic tower survived and is now a branch of the Museum of Kraków.

The tower rises about 70 metres above the Main Market Square. The visitor route involves 110 stone steps, a detail worth knowing before deciding whether the climb suits everyone in your group.

Walk around it before climbing

We would start outside, comparing the clock high above the square with the stone carving at its base. Our spring photographs show how branches and lamps change the view from each approach. The tower makes more sense once you imagine the larger municipal building that once stood beside it.

Plan the visit

Check current opening dates and admission with the Museum of Kraków; tower visits can be seasonal. The narrow stair climb is different from walking across the open square. If stairs are unsuitable, the exterior still gives you the Gothic masonry and several clear views of the clock.
