Leaving time for Oskar Schindler’s Enamel Factory

A reason to pause here

The portraits in the window stop us before the ticket desk does. We would give this visit time for the people and wartime history behind the building, then leave space afterwards before rushing elsewhere.

The factory and the people it sheltered

The factory at Lipowa 4 opened in 1937. After the German invasion, it was confiscated from its Jewish owners and taken over by Oskar Schindler in autumn 1939. His enamelware business employed Jewish workers during the occupation.

After the Kraków ghetto was liquidated in March 1943, Schindler obtained permission for a subcamp at the factory. Later he moved production and workers to Brünnlitz in occupied Czechoslovakia, saving about 1,100 people. The former administration building now houses the Museum of Kraków exhibition on the city under German occupation from 1939 to 1945.

Give the exhibition more time than the entrance

Our photographs begin with the portrait windows and continue around the factory buildings. We would pause at those faces before going inside, then give the exhibition time for its accounts of ordinary lives under occupation.

The museum covers the city’s wartime history as well as Schindler and the factory. It deserves attention beyond a search for film locations. MOCAK shares the wider former industrial site but is a separate museum visit.

Plan the visit

Check tickets, entry times, visitor rules and age guidance through the Museum of Kraków. Book ahead when the museum advises it, and confirm the entrance at Lipowa 4. This exhibition includes difficult wartime subjects; choose it thoughtfully for younger visitors. Consult the museum directly about accessibility and photography rather than inferring arrangements from the exterior gallery.
