A reason to pause here
The façade sits at the end of a short street view, then the painted ceiling changes the scale of the visit. We would give both the doorway and the vaulting time.
Bażanka’s church and Placidi’s façade
The Piarists settled in Kraków in 1660. Their Church of the Transfiguration was built in 1718–1728 to a design by Kacper Bażanka. Franciszek Placidi designed the façade added in 1759–1761, closing the view north along Saint John’s Street.
Inside, eighteenth-century sculpture and paintings include ceiling decoration by Franciszek Eckstein. The church also holds the heart of educational reformer Stanisław Konarski, brought to Kraków in 1882. The stairs at the front flank a separate entrance to the crypt.
Let your eyes travel from the steps to the vaults
Our photographs begin with the pale façade and its stone details before entering the painted interior. We would pause at the foot of the steps to see how the façade fills the street view. Inside, looking up slowly gives the ceiling more attention than a photograph taken straight towards the altar.
Plan the visit
The church is at Pijarska 2. Fit an interior visit around worship and any events; the crypt has separate access arrangements. The front stairs are visible in the gallery, so ask the church about alternative access if needed. Pair the exterior with the nearby Czartoryski Museum area and the Planty.
- Look back along Saint John’s Street to understand the façade’s position.
- Check crypt access separately from the main church.
