A reason to pause here

The round market building gives the square a centre, but the stalls and adjoining lanes pull us in several directions. We would come with time to browse and a loose plan for food.

A market hall built in 1900

The square developed as the district’s earlier irregular building plots were reorganised during the nineteenth century. Architect Jan Rzymkowski’s twelve-sided market building was completed in 1900. The Okrąglak included shops and a section used for kosher poultry slaughter.

The square’s market use continued through later changes. Food counters, stalls and surrounding businesses now give a walk here several possible stops, each with its own hours.

Walk round before joining a queue

We would make a circuit of the round hall before choosing where to stop. Our photographs include stalls and adjoining lanes as well as the central building. The square works best with a loose plan: browse what is actually there that day, then look at a current menu if you want food.

Plac Nowy is a public square in Kazimierz. Market activity and food-counter hours vary, so check current city event information and individual businesses if a particular stall matters to your visit. Keep access routes open in queues and expect more activity in the evening. Nearby museums and synagogues need separate planning.
