Saint Adalbert’s Church: the little building before the market square

A reason to pause here

The little church on the Main Market Square is easy to walk past while looking for the Cloth Hall. Our photographs make us want to stop here first: a few steps take the eye from an open square to a much smaller room beneath a painted dome.

Older than the square around it

The church’s basic structure dates to the eleventh and twelfth centuries, before the Main Market Square was laid out. Seventeenth-century rebuilding gave it much of its present Baroque appearance. Exposed Romanesque masonry lies below the current paving level, showing how the ground around the church has risen.

Step from the square to a smaller space

We would stop here before letting the larger buildings take all our attention. Our photographs show the contrast between the small pale exterior and the decorated altar and ceiling inside. Look at the low wall details from outside as well.

Plan the visit

Follow current entrance notices and respect worship. Any exhibition or organised interior visit has its own arrangements; do not rely on old published prices or seasonal hours. The small interior can feel crowded quickly, so avoid blocking the door.
