A reason to pause here
St Barbara’s feels close to the square but turns our attention towards the painted interior. We would leave time to look up, then look back towards the doorway and its stonework.
A church within the former cemetery
Saint Barbara’s was built in the fourteenth century, partly funded by Queen Jadwiga. Its position makes more sense when you know that today’s Mariacki Square was once the cemetery surrounding Saint Mary’s Church. The smaller church initially served that burial ground.
The church adjoins the Jesuit monastery complex. The municipal visitor guide identifies the late-fifteenth-century Garden of Olives sculpture beside its western wall and an early-fifteenth-century stone Pietà inside. These older works sit alongside the painted interior seen in our photographs.
From stone carving to the painted ceiling
The open doorway and brick exterior are a good place to start before letting your eyes adjust inside. We are drawn to the ceiling paintings, but would return to the smaller sculptures afterwards. A short visit works best when it leaves room for both.
Plan the visit
Approach from Mariacki Square beside Saint Mary’s Basilica. Check the door notices for worship and visitor access; admission arrangements for the neighbouring basilica are separate. Keep the entrance clear, avoid flash where photography is allowed, and expect old thresholds at the doorway.
