A reason to pause here

The coloured walls and stained glass are what hold our attention here. We would let our eyes adjust to the interior and look up slowly, then notice the quieter passages around the church.

A medieval church with later paintings

Duke Bolesław the Chaste supported the construction of the Franciscan church in the thirteenth century. His sister Salomea was buried here. Repeated fires and rebuilding changed the church’s structure and decoration over the following centuries.

Stanisław Wyspiański designed the painted decoration and stained-glass windows that now draw many visitors inside. His floral and geometric motifs cover parts of the choir and transept. Look towards the entrance for the large God the Father window; it is easy to miss when facing only the altar.

Give your eyes time to adjust

The coloured walls and windows in our gallery make us want to stay still for a moment after entering. We would look at the paintings close enough to notice their plant forms, then step back to see them across the church. Leave the monastery’s cloisters for a separate part of the visit if access permits.

Plan the visit

The basilica is on Franciszkańska Street near All Saints Square. Fit visiting around services and follow the current photography notices. Ask about access to the cloisters rather than assuming all monastery doors are open. Old thresholds and changes in level deserve a check before arranging a visit with limited mobility.
