Look above the shop windows

Sławkowska makes us want to look above the shop windows. The balconies, plaques and older frontages in this collection give a short Old Town walk enough details to keep us moving at an unhurried pace.

A street within the medieval walls

Sławkowska is among the Old Town streets identified in Kraków’s municipal account of its earliest street names. Its northern end once led to the Sławkowska Gate in the city’s fortifications. The gate disappeared during the early nineteenth-century clearance of much of the medieval wall; the surviving Florian Gate and adjoining towers are elsewhere along the northern edge of the Old Town.

Follow the upper floors

A balcony supported by carved brackets is enough to slow us down here. Our photographs move between long street views and the timber entrances beneath those upper windows. Give yourself a little room on the pavement to look up without stopping in a doorway.

Near Saint Mark’s, the Crucifixion group outside the church gives the walk a more specific stopping point. From there, continue towards the Planty or turn back towards the Main Market Square. A short detour can be more satisfying than trying to photograph every frontage.

Plan the visit

Explore from the public pavement. Courtyard gates and residential entrances do not imply visitor access. The church has its own arrangements for worship; check locally before attempting an interior visit.
