Starowiślna Street: following Kraków’s old river name

A reason to pause here

Starowiślna gives our walk a busy connecting street between the Old Town and Kazimierz. We would take time with the crossings, then look up at the frontages before turning into a quieter lane.

A street laid out in 1881

Starowiślna was laid out in 1881. Its name comes from the old Vistula channel that it crossed near today’s junction with Dietla. The street runs from the Old Town edge towards the Powstańców Śląskich bridge.

Tram tracks were introduced in the twentieth century as the street’s transport role grew. Current reconstruction and traffic arrangements need a fresh check; the photographs show the street at their capture dates.

Use the main street, then take a side lane

We would follow the upper façades between crossings, then turn into a quieter Kazimierz street when the route allows. Our photographs record the busy connection as part of discovering the district. Pausing beside a clear stretch of pavement makes looking up easier than doing it while crossing.

Plan the visit

Check current city transport and roadwork notices for your approach. Use marked crossings and watch tram movements. Plan a short section between chosen stops rather than assuming the entire street is a pedestrian route. Museum and synagogue visits in Kazimierz need separate bookings or access checks.
