A reason to pause here
The low memorial deserves its own pause beside the taller Grunwald Monument. We would read the inscriptions and leave the boundary clear for anyone who has come to remember.
The memorial before the monument
A memorial to the unknown soldier was established here in 1925. It was destroyed during the German occupation along with the Grunwald Monument. The present memorial belongs to the 1976 restoration of the square’s commemorative setting.
Read at ground level
We would stop at the low slab before looking up at the larger monument. The inscriptions and chain boundary keep the attention close to the ground. This is a place to leave room for remembrance, even during a busy walk between Kleparz and the Old Town.
Plan the visit
The tomb is an outdoor memorial on Jan Matejko Square. Stay outside its boundary and do not sit or place bags on the slab. Keep clear when wreaths are being laid or commemorations are under way.

- Allow the tomb its own stop on a visit to the square.
