A reason to pause here
The red-brick arches and the small fittings on the wall give us a reason to slow down. This is the kind of short Podgórze street where looking closely changes the walk.
A street in the former town of Podgórze
Podgórze received town rights in 1784 and became part of Kraków in 1915. Węgierska belongs to the streets where that separate town is still easy to picture. The district council identifies the former school at number 5 as a building from 1879–1881, with brickwork drawing on Romanesque forms.
Look at the wall as well as the skyline
Our photographs linger on window arches, a little wall-mounted basin and doorways close to pavement level. We would walk the short street slowly, then join a longer route towards Podgórze Market Square. The small details are easier to see on foot than from the roadway.
Plan the visit
Start with the district council’s walking information and use current city transport information for the approach. This is a working street with homes and entrances, so keep the pavement clear and enter courtyards only where public access is indicated.
- Look for the history panel beside the pavement.
- Combine the street with Saint Joseph’s Church and Podgórze Market Square.
