The bust and the figure at its base draw our attention to different levels of the same monument. We would use the name on the pedestal as a reason to learn more about the artist.

A painter remembered in the park

The monument commemorates Artur Grottger, the nineteenth-century painter and draughtsman. The National Archives identify its sculptor as Wacław Szymanowski and preserve historical views of the memorial. The layered composition includes both the artist’s bust and a reclining figure below it.

Look down after looking up

We would begin with the name on the pedestal, then follow the sculpture down to the lower figure. Our single photograph invites that closer look without pretending to cover the whole setting. Continue towards Szczepański Square if you want to add an exhibition to the walk.

The monument can be viewed from public Planty paths. Keep off its planted base and leave the surrounding route open. Check separate exhibition information for the Palace of Art rather than assuming the outdoor stop includes indoor access.
