Juliusz Leo’s monument: the mayor beside the river crossing

A reason to pause here

The seated figure of Juliusz Leo makes us want to read the inscription beside it. We would use this small stop to learn about the mayor associated with Kraków’s expansion, then continue towards the river crossing nearby.

Remembering the city’s expansion

The monument was unveiled in February 2018 near the junction of Józefińska and Nadwiślańska, close to Bernatek footbridge. It commemorates Juliusz Leo, a mayor associated with Kraków’s expansion and Podgórze’s incorporation in 1915. Sculptor Karol Badyna records the bronze work among his projects.

We would pause at the inscription before continuing to the river. The seated figure keeps the stop at a human scale, even with the bridge and moving traffic nearby. Our photographs make it a useful small detour during a Podgórze walk.

Plan the visit

Use the public pavement around the square and leave space for people approaching the crossing. Do not sit on or climb the sculpture. The monument and bridge artwork are separate stops with different histories.
