Michał Bałucki’s monument: a writer beside the theatre quarter

A reason to pause here

The name on the pale stone base is the starting point for this little pause. We like noticing a writer’s memorial while moving between the theatre quarter and the park paths.

A playwright’s memorial

The monument to playwright Michał Bałucki was unveiled in May 1911 near the municipal theatre. A contemporary newspaper report records the ceremony, attended by theatre performers, literary representatives and city officials. The bust remains part of the park’s sequence of memorials.

Read the name beneath the trees

We would let the inscribed pale base draw us closer before looking up at the bust. This is a small stop suited to a walk around the theatre, rather than a destination that needs an hour. The nearby paths give you space to pause without blocking the street.

Plan the visit

Approach on the public park paths and keep clear of planted ground. If you are combining the monument with a performance, check the theatre’s current programme separately; the park is not an entrance route into the auditorium.
