Enjoy the possibility, give the animal room
We like knowing that the Smokies are home to animals whose lives carry on around the roads and trails. A bear sighting can be exciting, and the way we respond matters. Black bears live throughout the park. Stay at least 50 yards from bears and other wildlife that may pose a danger. If an animal changes its behavior because you are nearby, move farther away.
We’re happy to watch from a safe distance and let the animal go on its way. Do not approach, feed or surround it. If a bear appears beside the road, stop only in a designated pullout and remain inside the vehicle. Keep traffic moving and do not get out for a closer view.
Make the small preparations part of the walk
Packing food securely is part of being ready for a day here. Keep food, trash and scented items in a vehicle or approved bear-resistant storage, and never leave food in a tent. That applies to a picnic stop as much as an overnight stay. We want the things we bring into the park to leave with us.
For a walk with a dog, choose the Gatlinburg Trail or Oconaluftee River Trail. Dogs are prohibited on other park trails. Keep permitted dogs leashed and check for temporary closures while planning the route, so everyone coming along has a suitable place to walk.
- Keep at least 50 yards from bears and other wildlife that may pose a danger.
- Store food and scented items securely, including at picnic areas.
- Check current bear warnings and trail closures before a hike.
