The ridges are what draw us up here
There is something we find absorbing about a view made almost entirely of mountain ridges. You can spend time following their outlines and still find another layer farther away. That is what draws us to Kuwohi. The half-mile climb to the tower gives us another reason to get out of the car and spend time on foot.
Kuwohi, formerly called Clingmans Dome, rises to 6,643 feet and is the highest point in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Its access road branches from Newfound Gap Road. In 2026, the park lists the road as open from April 1 through November 29, weather and conditions permitting. A clear morning in Gatlinburg does not guarantee a clear summit, so check the road notice and bring a warm, windproof layer.
Let the short walk take the time it needs
The paved trail climbs half a mile from the parking area to the observation tower. It sounds short on paper, but the grade is steep. The benches give you a chance to pause and look around; let the slowest walker set the pace. The return follows the same path downhill.
When the clouds lift, the tower ramp gives broad views across the ridges. Cloud can also hide the distance completely. We’d go with some flexibility about the view: the weather is part of planning a mountain visit, and another day may suit the summit better.
Keep a lower stop in mind
Parking is limited and the summit has no reliable mobile service. Save directions before leaving town and use signed overlooks along the drive. If the summit is covered in cloud, Newfound Gap and its nearby overlooks give you lower places to stop. We like having that option ready so the day can follow the conditions.
- Check the Kuwohi Road schedule and live conditions before leaving.
- Carry water and a warm layer, and allow time for the steep half-mile climb.
