Keep Laurel Falls for when the trail reopens

We’re drawn to waterfall walks for the chance to pause beside the water after spending some time on foot. Laurel Falls is an 80-foot waterfall reached by a 2.6-mile round-trip trail from Little River Road, west of Sugarlands Visitor Center. Its paved path has steep and uneven sections that have needed major repairs.

As of September 30, 2026, the National Park Service lists Laurel Falls Trail as closed for rehabilitation and anticipates reopening in 2027. That makes it a place to keep for a future visit. Confirm the current notice before travelling, because work schedules can change, and do not go to the trailhead expecting access.

Give another open route a chance

A closure means changing the plan for that day. We’d check the park’s current conditions page and ask a ranger which open waterfall walk fits the group’s time and ability. Choosing an alternative with those details in mind gives everyone a better chance to enjoy the outing.

Streams rise after heavy rain, and wet rock is slippery. Stay on the open route and behind barriers, including when taking photographs. The falls will still be there when the work is finished; closed areas need to stay clear for the people repairing them.
