Between Water and Sky: the balancing figures over Bernatek footbridge

A reason to pause here

We keep looking up at the figures balanced above Father Bernatek footbridge. They give us a reason to stop midway across, then look back at the river before continuing between Kazimierz and Podgórze.

A later addition to the crossing

The footbridge opened in 2010. Jerzy Kędziora’s Between Water and Sky installation began here in September 2016, placing balancing figures above the river crossing. The art foundation documents the project and its subsequent development.

Look up, then back towards the river

We would stop where there is room to notice the figures without blocking the bridge. Each direction changes their outline against buildings and sky. Then look down the Vistula before continuing between Kazimierz and Podgórze; the crossing itself is part of the pleasure.

Plan the visit

This is a public crossing shared by people walking and cycling. Keep moving lanes clear and do not climb the bridge structure or attach anything to the artwork. Wind and changing light can affect photographs, so wait from a safe position rather than step into others’ path.
