Getting to know Cades Cove through its old buildings

Stop for a building that catches your attention

A simple building can hold our attention for a long time. We like looking at its shape, reading who used it and then seeing how it sits in the place around it. Cades Cove gives that curiosity plenty of room, with preserved buildings among the open fields of the mountain valley.

The loop road passes the Primitive Baptist, Methodist and Missionary Baptist churches, several cabins and the Cable Mill area. Signs at the stops identify the buildings and explain their histories. We’d choose a few to spend time at and read the signs while the building is in front of us.

Cable Mill brings together a working gristmill and the Becky Cable House. We’re curious about how the mill works, so a scheduled demonstration would help us choose when to come. Opening hours and demonstrations vary by season; check the park schedule before making it the main reason for your visit.

Let the visit follow the pace of the loop

The road is one way, and that affects the day’s rhythm. We’d allow two to four hours for the drive, then add time for the buildings we want to see. Park in signed areas and follow posted access rules. If a pullout is full, continue to the next one. Do not enter closed buildings, climb fences or remove objects; leave the place ready for the next visitor to look around.
