Hotel Copernicus: reading a Kanonicza façade

A reason to pause here

The carved doorway and window surrounds make the hotel frontage a stop on our Kanonicza walk. These photographs show the building from the street, so we would judge a stay from its current room details as well.

Medieval houses, a canon’s palace and restoration

The hotel’s building history begins with a plot occupied in the early fourteenth century. Two houses followed in the middle of that century. Between 1411 and 1435, Canon Paweł Włodzimierski combined them into a residence. A fire in 1455 brought rebuilding, followed by further sixteenth-century changes.

Austrian authorities requisitioned the property in 1802. After standing empty and deteriorating in the late twentieth century, it was bought by the Likus family in 1998 and restored for use as a hotel. Its façade retains stone window surrounds and a Renaissance portal dated 1554.

Make a short stop at the doorway

The stone carving in our photographs is worth looking at even if you are staying elsewhere. We would compare the window surrounds with the entrance, then continue along Kanonicza towards the nearby museums. These street views tell us about the building; they do not review its rooms or service.

Hotel Copernicus is at Kanonicza 16 in the historic centre. Check the operator’s current room details, booking terms and arrival instructions before reserving. Vehicle access is restricted in this part of the city, so arrange luggage drop-off with the hotel. Restaurant access and reservations are separate from a street-side architecture stop.
