Make time for the climb as well as the summit

What draws us to a mountain walk is having time to see a place change as we move through it. Śnieżka gives a day in the Karkonosze a clear destination. Leave enough time to enjoy the climb without rushing for the top, and give the return just as much attention when planning the day.

Karkonosze National Park lists the Silesian Way from the Biały Jar bus stop in Karpacz to Śnieżka as 6.7 km one way, with 842 m of elevation gain. Its estimate is two to three hours uphill with stops. Walking back by the same route makes this a full mountain day. These figures apply to this route; check the park map for other approaches and choose your return plan before starting.

Let the weather have a say

We’d like a clear summit view, but the conditions decide whether the climb makes sense. Śnieżka is exposed to wind, low cloud and sudden temperature changes. Carry waterproof and warm layers, food, water and an offline map. Turn back if the weather or footing becomes unsafe. Stay on the marked path, including when snow or mud makes a section awkward to cross.

Check the route before setting out

Karkonosze National Park can close trails seasonally, including in winter and spring. Dogs, bicycles and other activities have separate restrictions. We’d check the current rules and notices while choosing the walk, then look again on the day. It is easier to enjoy the mountain when the route you have planned is open and suitable for everyone coming along.

  • Check the trail map and closure notices on the day.
  • Plan for the full return journey, carry weather protection and stay on marked trails.
