Palace of Art: read the façade before choosing an exhibition

A reason to pause here

Two exterior views give us a useful starting point for the Palace of Art: the entrance framed by trees and the wider frontage across the square. We would look at the current exhibition before deciding how much of the day to keep for the rooms inside.

Built for the art society

The Palace of Art opened in 1901 for the Society of Friends of Fine Arts. Franciszek Mączyński designed the Secession-style building. Jacek Malczewski designed the gilded frieze, while busts of artists decorate the sides and Apollo appears above the principal entrance.

Take a circuit of the outside

We would begin with the doorway framed by trees, then step across the square for the whole frontage. The two views in our gallery leave plenty more to find on a circuit around the building. An exhibition can become the next part of the visit once you have checked the programme.

Plan the visit

Look up the society’s current exhibition and admission information before setting aside time indoors. The façade can be viewed from the square without buying a ticket. Ask about access to the exhibition rooms if stairs or thresholds are a concern.
