Poselska Street: old walls on the way to Planty

A reason to pause here

The cobbles and long walls give Poselska a slower pace than the main route nearby. We would follow it towards Planty and leave time for the little openings between the buildings.

A convent, a prison and a museum

The former Discalced Carmelite complex beside Poselska and Senacka dates from the seventeenth century. After its religious use ended, Austrian authorities converted it into a prison and court in 1797. The city assigned the buildings to the Archaeological Museum in 1954; the museum moved here in 1967.

Follow the lane to the garden ring

We like the contrast between the narrow cobbled street and the openings towards Planty. Look at the doorways and long walls before turning into the park. This is a useful short link between Grodzka’s churches and the southern side of the Old Town.

Plan the visit

For the Archaeological Museum, check its current visitor page: renovations affect the available exhibitions and entrance arrangements. Do not assume a gate beside Poselska is the museum entrance. Our street photographs do not establish that the museum garden is open.
