A reason to pause here
We like arriving at Saint Florian’s Gate from the green side of the walls. The Barbican, planted paths and gateway fit into one short walk, with the Old Town streets waiting beyond the arch.
The retained northern entrance
The gate is first mentioned in 1307, with stone construction from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and a later seventeenth-century roof. It survived the nineteenth-century clearance of much of Kraków’s defences. Trams once passed through its opening, from 1901 to 1953.
Approach from Planty
We would begin beside the Barbican, then follow the walls towards the arch. Our photographs show how trees and planting soften the approach before the Old Town streets begin. Look back after passing through: the gateway frames a different view in each direction.
Plan the visit
Walking through the gateway and visiting museum-managed defensive structures are different activities. Check the Museum of Kraków for current access to the wall route or Barbican. Keep the arch clear of groups and delivery traffic.
