Wolnica Square: the old town hall of Kazimierz

A reason to pause here

The former town hall gives the square a clear centre, while the fountain and benches make us want to stay outdoors for a while. We would pair the square with the museum now inside the town hall.

The market of a separate town

Kazimierz once had its own market square and town hall. The name Wolnica comes from the free-trading privilege that allowed non-guild butchers to sell here on Saturdays. After Kazimierz became part of Kraków in 1800, the square became smaller and the town hall lost its municipal role.

The town hall retains medieval fabric beneath later rebuilding. It subsequently housed schools and, after the Second World War, became home to the Ethnographic Museum. The Three Musicians fountain is by Bronisław Chromy.

Stay outside for a while

We would look at the long town hall façade before walking over to the fountain. Trees, benches and surrounding house fronts give the square several smaller places to pause. Corpus Christi Church is close enough to make a natural next stop.

Plan the visit

Check the Ethnographic Museum’s current exhibitions and admission if you want to enter the town hall. The outdoor square can be part of a walk without a museum booking. Leave space for market activity or events when these occupy the paving.
