A reason to pause here
The two figures share a raised base in the garden, which makes us want to look at them together. We would stop long enough to understand the royal names before returning to the park avenue.
A nineteenth-century royal memorial
Tomasz Oskar Sosnowski made the monument to Queen Jadwiga and King Władysław Jagiełło, erected in 1886. The royal pair also appear in the history of Kraków’s university: Jadwiga’s bequest supported its renewal, and Jagiełło provided premises where teaching resumed in 1400.
Look at the figures together
The two figures and their raised base are the centre of our spring gallery. We would read the inscription before following the curving paths around the garden. If the names are new to you, a later visit to the university quarter gives them another context.
Plan the visit
The monument is an outdoor stop in Planty. Follow the public paths around the beds rather than approaching across the planting. Seasonal flowers may differ from our photographs; allow a little time to read the sculpture even when the garden is less colourful.

- Connect this stop with Collegium Maius on a longer Old Town walk.
