A reason to pause here
The long brick wall gives us a line to follow through this garden. The route boards and stone markers are worth reading before going back into the Old Town streets.
From defences to a public walking ring
The Planty replaced much of the old defensive belt in the early nineteenth century. Feliks Radwański proposed the park and Florian Straszewski helped carry the work forward. The surviving northern fortifications were retained within the changing city setting.
Florianka is a named section of that park ring. Its boundary walls, paths and markers make it possible to see the transition from the open green space back into the built-up streets.
Let the boundary guide the route
The long brick wall is the line our photographs follow. We would pause at the information boards before turning into the Old Town, then notice how the close street frontages change the scale of the walk. You do not need to finish the whole ring to enjoy this section.
Plan the visit
Plan this as an outdoor city walk with public paths. Look at posted route information and current maintenance notices before taking a side path. Tree cover gives shade, but paving can be slippery after rain or leaf fall. Use a city transport stop near the end of your chosen section if you do not want to retrace it.
- Read the route boards before turning into the Old Town.
- Wear shoes with grip on wet paving and leaves.
